What is Kinesiology Tape?
Kinesiology Tape is a high-tech elastic tape that supports muscles and joints without reducing range of movement. It’s thin, light, supportive and comfortable to wear for up to 5 days. It is applied over muscles to reduce pain and inflammation, relax overused or tired muscles, and support muscles in movement on a 24-hour-a-day basis. It is not a restrictive type of taping and allows for full range of motion.
In contrast, traditional sports taping is wrapped around a joint strictly for stabilization and support during an athletic event. Kinesiology tape is used in the treatment of anything from headaches to foot problems and everything in-between. Examples include rehabilitation from sports injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, lower back strain/pain, knee and shoulder conditions, and many more.
How does Kinesiology Tape work?
Besides providing support for muscles in movement, kinesiology tape alleviates discomfort* and facilitates lymphatic drainage by microscopically lifting the skin away from the muscle and fascia below. This creates a decompressive effect, decreasing inflammation while enabling a more effective flow of lymphatic fluid in and out of the target area.
*Pain and touch use the same nerve pathways to get to the brain. Adding a large area of touch dilutes the pain – like cold water dilutes the hot in a bathtub.
